Bettampady, November 14: Traces of skeleton of Venkataramana Bhatta, the prime suspect who had gone absconding after four persons were found murdered in his own house five months ago , have been found under a tree in a Kakkoor forest.
Besides human skeleton found under the tree, spectacles and an umbrella also found at the spot has also been identified as those of Bhatta.
Bhatta's relative Santhosh and Krishnappa Naik, a local resident, have told the Puttur Rural police that the skeleton is of Bhatta based on the sandals, spectacles and umbrella found at the spot. However, forensic tests will be carried out to confirm if the skeleton is indeed of Bhatta. It would also be ascertained if Bhatta was also murdered or whether he committed suicide.
A case has been registered against Bhatta with regard to the murder that took place in his house. If the suicide of Bhatta is proven, the case will be converted into a technical murder case, police have said.
The murder in his house came to light on June 14. Bhatta had gone missing while his wife Sandhya (47), and children Vidya (18), Harigovinda Sharma (15), and Vanitha (13) were found murdered in the house.
On June 3, a theft had taken place at Bhatta's house wherein Rs. 18,000 in cash and jewellery was stolen. The police sensed something fishy as Bhatta had been giving contradictory statements post-theft. Police had summoned Bhatta and his family to the station on June 11 for questioning with regard to the theft. The same day, Bhatta's wife and children were murdered. On June 12, Bhatta had threatened and chased away Vimala Naik, a computer typist who had come to his house. That day, a few people had seen Bhatta at Tumbutadka bus stand. But he had been absconding ever since.
