Mangalore, November 15: An exclusive cancer treatment centre, Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), will be inaugurated by cancer survivors and Yuvraj Singh Foundation on Sunday at the hospital premises in Pumpwell, Mangalore.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, Dr Suresh Rao, Head of Cancer Division, MIO, said that the purpose of setting up an exclusive cancer treatment centre was to provide the best technology available at present to the people living in the region.
Cancer is a leading cause of death in the world, accounting for eight lakh deaths in 2008. A world-class facility in Mangalore will be convenient for cancer patients to undergo treatment, since it is of a long duration. There is a facility of new Rapid Arc treatment for the patients along with a team of experts with good experience in using the technology. The hospital will be beneficial to those who cannot afford to travel and pay high costs for treatment in larger cities where this technology is available, he said.
He said that the inauguration of the institute by survivors of cancer will provide hope and courage to a thousand others who are suffering silently from cancer, and may not be receiving any treatment out of fear. The Cancer Education and Awareness Cell of MIO is also involved with government and private groups in creating awareness among the public in the region, he said.
The institute will be inaugurated on Sunday at 10 am.
Dr Krishna Prasad, Dr Sanath Hegde and Dr Naveen were present at the press conference.
