Mangalore, November 15: Members of minority community in India should cooperate with majority Hindus by refraining from cow-slaughter in order to create harmony in the society, said Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader M B Puranik.

He was addressing the saffron-clad Hindutva activists converged in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner in city on Thursday afternoon to pressurize Karnataka government and department of police to put an end to cow-slaughter in the state.

“We Hindus believe in co-existence. However minorities must understand our sentiments and cooperate with us to create peace and harmony in the society,” proclaimed Mr Puranik.

Stating that Mahatma Gandhi himself wanted a total ban on cow slaughter even before the independence, Mr Puranik blamed the Indian politicians for failing to fulfill the wish of the father of the nation.

He said that despite Karnataka had adopted Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act in 1964 the rulers of the state have failed to implement it. Even though the BJP-led state government tried to replace the bill with some amendments - to prohibit the slaughter of cows and calves of she-buffaloes, bull and buffalo male or female - the governor did not allow it, he lamented.

Vedamurthy Kuntaru Shree Ravish Tantri said that a few Muslim organisation in this country have engaged themselves in spreading hatred and enmity in the society through conversion and terrorism. “We must prevent them,” he said.

“Mere wearing saffron is not enough. Exhibit your strength against those who attack Hindus and slaughter cows”, he called upon the Hindutva activists.

Presiding over the protest rally Rajesh Nayak Ulipadiguthu said that eve-teasing and conversion of Hindu girls are the two main reasons for the communal riots in India. “If you prevent these two things there will be peace in the society”, he said.

Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell said that Muslims deliberately consume beef to hurt the sentiment of Hindus.

Prior to the protest meet the activists took out a rally from Jyothi Circle shouting slogans against “crime against cattle”. The event was organized under the banner of the Mangalore unit of VHP and Bajrang Dal.

Vajradehi Mutt pontiff Rajashekharanada Swamiji, Manohar Tulajaram, Krishna Moorthy, Kateel Dinesh Pai, Jithendra Kottari, Shivanada Mendon, Premalatha Acharya, Vijayashri and Jagadish Shenava were present on the occasion. A number of cattle too were dragged to the protest ground by the agitators.
