Mangalore, November 20: A north Indian construction worker was buried to death while six others were rescued after a major landslip at a construction site at Derebail, Konchady in the city on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Vasyuta Mondal (50) from West Bengal.
Six other workers, who were trapped under the debris after a part of a hillock collapsed at the construction site, were rescued by the firefighters in two hour long operation.
The other injured identified as Sherfarul Biswas (50), Nazarullah Sheikh (32), Nazbur Huda (22), all from West Bengal; Subash (50) of Raichur, Sankaramma (50) of Bagalkot and Shilpa (17) of Badami were rushed to nearby A J Hospital for treatment.
Around 23-25 fire personnel and four fire serve vehicles were involved in rescue operations.
The incident took place between 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. when the workers were busy in constructing a retaining wall for an upcoming building.
Local residents and officials have blamed lack of safety measures adopted by the construction company for the tragedy.
Fire Officer H S Vardarajan said that they received a call about the mishap at around 12.10 pm and immediately reached the location. “The staff rescued six labourers and had them admitted to a private hospital,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner Venkatesh said that an investigation will be conducted to ascertain whether the workers were wearing safety equipment and, if the construction company violated safety norms.
“In case the negligence is proved, action will be taken against the construction company and the contractor,” he said. Some 40 workers, including 12 women, are employed at the construction site, he added.
One of the injured said that around 15 labourers were working at the site when the incident occurred. “As we were thirsty, some of us had gone to drink water. We too would have died or suffered injuries had we been there at that time. We tried to save our colleagues by clearing the debris," she said.
