Mangalore, November 20: A north Indian construction worker was buried to death while six others were rescued after a major landslip at a construction site at Derebail, Konchady in the city on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Vasyuta Mondal (50) from West Bengal.

Six other workers, who were trapped under the debris after a part of a hillock collapsed at the construction site, were rescued by the firefighters in two hour long operation.

The other injured identified as Sherfarul Biswas (50), Nazarullah Sheikh (32), Nazbur Huda (22), all from West Bengal; Subash (50) of Raichur, Sankaramma (50) of Bagalkot and Shilpa (17) of Badami were rushed to nearby A J Hospital for treatment.

Around 23-25 fire personnel and four fire serve vehicles were involved in rescue operations.

The incident took place between 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. when the workers were busy in constructing a retaining wall for an upcoming building.

Local residents and officials have blamed lack of safety measures adopted by the construction company for the tragedy.

Fire Officer H S Vardarajan said that they received a call about the mishap at around 12.10 pm and immediately reached the location. “The staff rescued six labourers and had them admitted to a private hospital,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Venkatesh said that an investigation will be conducted to ascertain whether the workers were wearing safety equipment and, if the construction company violated safety norms.

“In case the negligence is proved, action will be taken against the construction company and the contractor,” he said. Some 40 workers, including 12 women, are employed at the construction site, he added.

One of the injured said that around 15 labourers were working at the site when the incident occurred. “As we were thirsty, some of us had gone to drink water. We too would have died or suffered injuries had we been there at that time. We tried to save our colleagues by clearing the debris," she said.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
