The Kanyakumari-based fishermen, including Captain Kevin and their boat 'Vijovin' and 600 kg catch (mainly squid) were safely brought to Karwar in the wee hours of Thursday, boat owner Joseph Antony said.
The boat, registered in Kanyakumari, had sent out for deep sea fishing from Kochi on December 3.
At 11.48 a.m. on Wednesday, water began to enter the engine room. The boat was about 33 nautical miles away from the Karwar coast when the incident took place.
The coast guard ship 'Sankalp', which was about 25 nautical miles away, reached the sinking boat within an hour of intercepting the distress signals on the wireless set, Coast Guards Commandant (operations and planning officer) Rajender Singh Sapal said in a press release.
Divers from the ship found 10 to 12 holes in the keel area which they temporarily plugged.
Later, the distressed fishing vessel was towed towards Karwar coast with the help of other fishing boats in the area, Commandant Sapal said.
The total loss will be known only after I reach Karwar on Friday, he added.
