Martyrs paid homage in city on Vijay Diwas

Mangalore, December 16: Commemorating India's historic victory over Pakistan in the Indo-Pak War of 1971, Vijay Diwas was celebrated in the city on Sunday, in honour of the brave soldiers who laid their lives in the Bangladesh Liberation war.

 

In a programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Ex Servicemen Association, the sacrifices of the armed forces were remembered and floral tributes were laid at the War Memorial in Kadri in memory of the martyrs.

 

Top officials such as IGP (Western Range) C H Pratap Reddy, Commissioner of Police Manish Khabikar, Commandant of District Home Guards Dr Nidarsh Hegde, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) G V Subramaniam, Brigadier Ichlampadi Najappa Rai, Retired Colonel Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandary, Lions District Governor M B Sadashiv and other dignitaries paid homage to the martyrs.

 

It can be recalled that three officers of the Indian Army were posthumously conferred the highest military decoration Param Vir Chakra for their gallant service in the 1971 War, namely Lance Naik Albert Ekka (14 Guards), Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal (17 Poona Horse) and Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon (18 Squadron Indian Air Force), while Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (3 Grenadiers) was conferred the same non-posthumously, Brigadier Rai told mediapersons on the occasion.

 

Students, teachers and NCC cadets from various colleges took part in the commemoration. Several citizens also attended the brief programme.

 

Vijay Diwas was celebrated in many parts of the country by the Indian armed forces.
