26-year old Sharun D'Souza from Santosh Nagar Kuthar and his 35-year-old Lancelot D'Souza alias Vincy, from Jeppu Bappal breathed their last in Sunday's tragedy at their accommodation within the construction site at a small town Yimthi neat Izki, about 140 kilometres north-west to Muscat.
“The duo along with their two room-mates were sleeping in a room at an under construction building and had lit coal fire to beat cold when the tragedy claimed two lives,” P.M. Jabir, Social Welfare Secretary with the Indian Social Club, informed on Tuesday.
He said that one of the four realised the smoke that had accumulated in the closed room but by that time two had died. One was admitted to the Nizwa Hospital in critical condition. “Sharon D'Souza and his uncle Lakaylet D'Souza, died in their sleep,” he said.
Sharon's brother Sachith D'Souza, who was the only person out of four not lose consciousness, raised the alarm but the two could not be saved. “The identity of the third serious person is yet not established except that he comes from north India,” he added.
Meanwhile, one of their colleagues, preferring anonymity, said that that Sachith was taken into custody by the Izki police until the investigations and autopsy was done on the two deceased.
He also said that the four were trapped in a room full of smoke. “They had lit coal fire as it was very cold in this building where we are engaged in painting job,” he added.
The four were working for a small Nizwa-based construction company, Ayoub Safawi Trading Company.
Jabir said that the construction company owner is not in a financial position to airlift the bodies of the D'Souzas. “I have requested the Indian embassy to intervene and arrange for sending the two bodies back to their home,” he added.
