Mangalore, Jan 2: Sullia police have taken the prime accused Vasanth Serigar into custody in the double-murder case which took place last week in Naraje-Kodankeri near Jayanagar in Sullia taluk.

The bodies of Padmavathi, wife of Harish Naik, and tractor driver Hithesh, who were murdered, were found lying together in a semi-nude state near the victim's home on Sunday. Hithesh had been hired by Harish Naik for the purpose of levelling the mud for the construction of his new home.

After the murders came to light, the suspicion had fallen immediately on Vasanth who had spent the night on Saturday in Harish's house but had gone missing the next morning. Subsequently, the police had begun a hunt for Vasanth.

An investigating police team led by Sullia Circle Inspector H V Sudarshan nabbed the accused at night on Monday at his relatives' house at nearby Ubaradka in Sullia taluk.

Confession

After questioning, Vasanth (52) is said to have confessed to the murders, citing the victims' alleged affair as the motive behind the crime.

According to Vasanth, he and Hithesh had consumed alcohol after meals at night on Saturday and arrived at Harish's house in a stupor, where they had apparently tried to convince Padmavathi to indulge in sexual activities with them.

This was apparently overheard even by her husband Harish and their children, who were asleep outside the house. Two other JCB operators sleeping with them went away in distaste to sleep in their own vehicle.

When Vasanth approached Padmavathi, Hithesh had allegedly crossed him. This resulted in an argument between them, which quickly turned into a heated confrontation which lasted the entire night.

Early the next morning, Vasanth flew into a rage upon seeing Padmavathi and Hitesh slink away from the house. Armed with an axe, he followed the duo to a nearby hillock. On finding them together, he confessed to having first struck Hithesh on his head with the axe and Padmavathi in a similar manner. Having killed them both, he then cleaned the weapon, kept it back in its place, and informed Harish about returning to Sullia.

Once the news of the murder spread around the place, he had gone into hiding before he was nabbed by the police.

In custody, Vasanth said that he was a regular at Harish's house over few years, and revealed as having had sexual relations with Padmavathi secretly from the past two-and-a-half years.

Originally from Kasaragod, he had been residing at Mullya in Ajjawara after having married there. Recently, he had stopped coming home and had taken to staying near Kasaragod. He is said to have had another marriage there.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
