Bantwal, Jan 3: A private bus driver was assaulted by a gang of miscreants on Wednesday night at Sunkadakatte near Karnataka-Kerala border.
The victim has been identified as Satish (28), a resident of Bedagudde in Karopadi region.
According to the information Satish provided to the police, Sattar (21) and Ansar (20), both residents of Sunkadakatte, came armed with lethal weapons and chopped his legs off before fleeing from the scene.
Few days ago in Sunkadakatte, a provocative speech made at the Ayyappa Deepothsava programme had disrupted the prevalent harmony leading to a communally-tense situation in the region. It has been said that due to this, both the religious communities began propagating hatred towards each other.
On Wednesday, Satish, having parked the private bus at Bedagudde junction after his last trip, was just alighting from it when the two accused arrived and began hurling verbal abuses. Sattar and Satish thereafter attacked him.
The wounded Satish was immediately taken and admitted to the hospital with the assistance of the locals.
As the news spread, members of Hindu organisations from Vittla arrived and gathered near the hospital. Police have registered a case.
