Mangalore, Jan 3: Media persons of Mangalore held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday against the arrest of Sharanraj, Cameraman of a local news channel, made by police in connection with the homestay attack case.
Speaking on the occasion Irshad, Reporter, Samaya News, said that the year 2013 has not begun well for journalists. While fellow journalist Naveen Soorinje continues to languish in jail for doing his duty, the arrest of Mr. Sharanraj has come as another blow for the journalistic fraternity.
Such curbing of freedom of expression will only discourage journalists from exposing truths in the future, he said and demanded that R Ashok, State Home Minister, take note of the situation and order the release of both Mr. Soorinje as well as Mr. Sharanraj at the earliest.
Later, a memorandum was also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner by PB Harish Rai, President, Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists' Association.
