HDK points fingers at unfulfilled promise of BJP, makes new promises

January 4, 2013

Mangalore, Jan 4: Highlighting the extent of maladministration and corruption of the BJP-led government in Karnataka and UPA government at the Centre, state president of Janata Dal (Secular) H D Kumaraswamy said that it was taking its toll on countless middle-class and low-class families in the State.

Speaking at the JD(S) party workers' convention held at Assaigoli Central Maidan on the outskirts of the city on Friday, he said that ever since the BJP came into power in the State four years ago, it had achieved close to nothing apart from making false promises to the people of Karnataka. From the day it has come to power, the party has been plagued by internal conflicts and lack of mutual trust, while the level of administration has sunk to the lowest rung. The vast sum of tax-payers' hard-earned money is being utterly misused by corrupt BJP officials. Such is the extent of corruption in the state. It is the worst government I have seen till date, he said.

Criticising former chief minister B S Yeddiyurappa and the newly-formed KJP, he said that the man had taken false credit for having initiated the Bhagyalakshmi scheme when he was the chief minister of Karnataka. While he is now proclaiming himself as a protector of the Muslim community and the minorities, it was the BJP government led by him that was in power when attacks took place on various churches in the district, women were assaulted in several incidents and minorities were tortured in the name of culture. Religion should not be important to an elected representative of the people, but rather improving the condition of those struggling in poverty. He must first and foremost think of those people who struggle for a daily meal, the BJP government takes no measures for their betterment, he said.

He said that the BJP government removed subsidy on fertilisers for the needy farmers, thus rendering them without means to grow proper crops. BPL cards were not distributed to few poor families, depriving them of several facilities. The economic situation of the country has been steadily deteriorating, due to several policies brought by the Congress-led UPA government. If this continues, middle-class families will be brought to streets, he said.

Asking for support from the people in the coming elections, he said that he would ensure clean drinking water in every home in the district and assured title-deeds of Kumki land to farmers. He also guaranteed strict policies for Endosulfan victims and affected families in the State to aid them, increasing the monthly wages for widows and elderly to Rs 1500, provision of Rs 2000 as monthly wages for the disabled and financial aid to those in severe debt.

JD(S) Dakshina Kannada district president M B Sadashiva also spoke on the occasion.

JD(S) leaders such as former ministers K Amaranath Shetty and B Nagaraj Shetty, Sushil Noronha, Shakeel Ahmed, Mohammed Kunhi Vittla, Vishwanath Pandit, D M Aslam, Pradeep Karkera and Abdul Azeez Malar participated in the convention.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.
