Mangalore, Jan 6: In a major allegation, Dean of Arts faculty at Mangalore University Prof K Abhaya Kumar has been purported to have sexually harassed a student from the Dalit community who had been pursuing her Ph.D research under his supervision.
Dalit activist Narayan Punchame came forward with this complaint at the monthly SC/ST grievance meeting held in the office of Superintendent of Police here on Sunday.
He said that the student, hailing from Kasaragod, has since discontinued her research after the incident four years ago. She is hesitant to come forward herself and register a legal complaint as she faces several threats.
However, he said that the issue has been brought to the attention of Vice- Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy 15 days ago, he said.
Additional Superintendent of Police M N Anucheth said that he would look into the matter and refer it to the Commissioner of Police.
A similar allegation was made on head of Department of Sociology Prof Jogan Shankar, who was purported to have chased a Dalit student and assaulted her with slippers. The student was also pursuing her Ph.D under his guidance.
Both the incidents are said to have taken place during the time when Prof K M Kaveriappa was the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
Ironically both Prof Kumar and Prof Shankar belong to Dalit community.
Mr Punchame said that he was ready to lodge complaints at Konaje police station if required. “I will decide further action depending on the response of the Vice-Chancellor,” he said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sadanand Vernekar was present at the meeting.
