Mangalore, Jan 7: Members of Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that practices like 'made-snana' and 'pankthi-bheda' should be completely abolished in temples in the state and urged the Pejawar Mutt seer Sri Vishweshatheertha Swami to support organisations in their agitation against these rituals.
Speaking at a press meet held here on Monday, CPI (M) district secretary B Madhava said that it was necessary to abolish casteist rituals of “Made snana” at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and “Pankti bheda” at Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi to bring social reformation and change.
When Sangh Parivar and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders propagate the idea that 'All Hindus are one', they should not discriminate between castes. The Pejawar seer should take the lead and end the practices which discriminate in the name of castes. There is no logic in suggesting 'yede-snana' instead of made-snana; which again encourages casteism, he said.
Swamiji is an influential person in the society, and also advises the government on religious matters. He has the capacity and potential to influence the masses and the government. His advice holds value and his mere presence in the agitation against the rituals will send a good message to the masses, he stressed, urging the seer to oppose the practices openly.
CPI (M) state secretariat member K R Shriyan said that people themselves questioned the continuation of such a medieval practice in an independent country.
CPI (M) leader Vasant Achari was present.
Earlier, the seer had proposed the idea of 'yede-snana', instead of 'made-snana in order to keep alive the beliefs of the devotees and also satisfy their beliefs. 'Yede Snana' is nothing but rolling over the 'Prasadam' of the Lord.
