Promote 'brother-sister' spirit among college students to curb sexual harassment: C T Ravi

Bangalore, Jan 11: The Karnataka government called upon the educational institutions in the state to promote a "brother-sister" relationship among students as part of a 12-point plan to curb sexual harassment.

Educational institutions "should organize workshops to promote sisterhood and brotherhood relationship among students", state Higher Education Minister C.T. Ravi told reporters unveiling the 12-point guideline to check sexual harassment on Thursday.

The guideline has been framed following the national outrage over the brutal assault and gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi, who later died in a Singapore hospital.

The guideline directed all colleges and higher educational institutions in the state to set up a committee to receive and hear complaints of harassment, including sexual harassment of girl students and women lecturers.

The committee would be headed by the principal or head of the institution and would have senior women lecturers, girl students, parents and eminent persons from society as members, Ravi said.

The committee should meet at least once a week and lodge a police complaint immediately on any kind of harassment, he said.
