Mysore, Jan 11: Calling Tipu Sultan one of the greatest rulers of India, Jnanpeeth laureate Prof U R Ananthamurthy has debunked opposition to the proposed Tipu University for minorities
Replying to the queries of media persons Mr Ananthamurthy said: "He was a freedom fighter and a great person. If we are not proud of Tipu, who else will be?”
“Political agendas apart, we should neither oppose the varsity for the study of minorities, nor we should have problem in the Union government's move to name it after Tipu," he said.
He refused to be drawn into the controversy over the statements by noted writers against the varsity proposed near Srirangapatna.
"Tipu is one of the greatest rulers of India. He was a good administrator. The pro- and anti- groups are using the issue to promote their political ends. It is just vote-based politics," he said, asserting that India is incomplete without Muslims.
