Udupi, Jan 12: Congress party worker and RTI activist Vandaru Vasudeva Adiga who was missing found dead at Kadur in Chickmagalur district on January 12.
The body bore multiple injuries and his face had been smashed in beyond recognition.
On Saturday, passersby saw a body which was floating in the tank and informed police.
A bill in the name of Adiga helped Sakharayapatna police establish the identity of Adiga, 40, whose body was found with hands and legs tied, and a heavy stone attached to his leg to prevent the body from surfacing. When his family insisted on a postmortem, a team of doctors from Shimoga Medical College was summoned. After an inquest, the body was handed over to the family, said Circle Inspector Balachandre Gowda.
MP Jayaprakash Hegde who visited the spot identified the body.
He was allegedly kidnapped on January 7 Monday night near Goliangady in the Shankaranayana police station limit.
According to his mother Shrungeshwari his neighbours, Ramesh Bayiri, Krishnamurthy and Shankaranarayana Bayiri had some dispute over land. In her complaint she had suspected that that the long pending land dispute, pending in court, may also be the reason behind her son's abduction.
However, police are looking at his role as an RTI activist as he had rubbed many government officials and quarry owners the wrong way by getting sensitive information through RTI.
On the day Adiga went missing, he had met his friend at Shiroor Moorukai at 8.30 pm. As he did not return home close to midnight, his friend Arun Kumar Shetty, Billadi gram Panchayat member, lodged a complaint at Shankaranarayana police station.
The two-wheeler which Adiga rode was found at a deserted place 12 km from Vandaru at Avarse Goliangady on Tuesday. His mobile phone was found in Avarse near Goliangady.
Speaking to presspersons, MP Jayaprakash Hegde said “Adiga was working in my office. As an RTI activist, he had collected lot of information on the illegal quarry functioning in the district. This is a planned murder. There is a mafia behind it, The police should probe into the incident from all angles and punish the guilty,” he said.
