Mangalore, Jan 16: President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Dr G Parameshwara said that the third leg of its four padayatras called 'Congressina Nadige Samarasyada Kadege' will be undertaken from Ullal to Udupi, to drive home the message of communal harmony in the coastal region of Karnataka.

Addressing media persons at a press conference at District Congress Office in the city on Wednesday, he said that the Congress had always condemned oppression of minorities, in the name of religion. The problem of communal tension in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts is a serious one, and there is a need for communal harmony in the region, he said.

The Congress leaders said that public meetings would be held at various places during the rally, wherein leaders of the Opposition in the Assembly and Council, Siddaramaiah and S.R. Patil respectively, along with various state and district Congress leaders would participate. The rally is also necessary to bring out the maladministration of the BJP in front of the people, he said.

He said that the date and structure of the rally will be announced in a curtain-raiser press conference in the coming days.

Tipu Sultan varsity

Speaking of the dispute over the proposal to establish a university named after Tipu Sultan, Dr Parameshwara said that if his party assumed power in the State after the Assembly elections, he would allow the establishment of the proposed Central University for minorities in the name of Tipu Sultan in Karnataka.

BJP legislator G Madhusudhan, who opposed the proposal and spoke ill of Union minister for minorities' affairs K Rahman Khan, should not have done so. Tipu Sultan was a freedom fighter who upheld all the traditions and the culture of the people. He was the most secular person at that point of time. As a responsible MLC, Madhusudhan should have welcomed the proposal of the establishment of a central university, he said, urging the State government to hand over land for the construction of the university, as per the Centre's directive.

Dissolve government

Taking on the BJP government, the KPCC chief said that the Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had lost the majority and support of his own party members and hence had no morality to prepare the state budget for the entire financial year. He said that the CM should instead account for the money spent on various sectors like agriculture, irrigation, education and others.

“Show the balance sheet to people before preparing the budget, and reveal how much remains in the treasury. I'm sure none remains, as six months' salaries of the government teachers are still due. If money still exists, let them prove it,” he declared, urging the CM to dissolve the government.

Congress leaders such as AICC Secretary Vinay Kumar Sorake, KPCC General Secretary Ivan D'Souza, MLA U T Khader, B Ramanath Rai, Mayor Gulzar Banu, Moideen Bava, Mithun Rai and several others were present.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
