The passengers were identified as Kunhi Mohammed Majeed of Mangalore and Mohiudeen Bikal of Gulbarga. The two had arrived from Dubai in a Gulf Air flight.
Customs officials seized 359 cartons of cigarettes from them. Officials said that the cigarettes were worth Rs 6 lakh.
The cartons were kept concealed in their baggage. "The duo were intercepted while they were trying to pass through the green channel without declaring the goods," officials said. The customs wing has launched a detailed probe.
A group from Kasaragod is suspected to be behind smuggling operations. This was the second such major seizure of cigarettes at the Cochin airport in the last two months.
"The two passengers have used the Cochin airport for smuggling operations for the first time. The duo selected an early morning flight because it arrives during the peak rush time. We have also announced special reward for people who pass information on smugglers," officials said.
