Banking sector sees 19.12 pc growth in DK; ZP CEO seeks banks to pay attention on 'Namma Mane' scheme

Mangalore, Jan 17: Banking sector in Dakshina Kannada district witnessed business growth of 19.12%, said J S Shenoy, Deputy General Manager of Syndicate Bank, the lead bank of the district.

Disclosing this information at a meeting to review the performance of banking sector during the second quarter of 2012-13 held at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath in Mangalore on Thursday, Mr. Shenoy said that with a year on year deposit growth of 22.41% and advances growth of 12.89%, banking sector in DK witnessed a business growth of 19.12% achieving a level of Rs.34219.63 crore.

Credit Deposit Ratio of the district has showed a declining trend in the last three years from 54.60 (on 30-9-2010) to 48.83 (30-9-2012), he said. Growth in deposit of rural branches was above 34% surpassing that of branches in urban areas which registered a growth of 20%, he said while suggesting that credit off take needs improvement in the district to achieve sustained CD ratio of at least 60%.

Amarnath Hegde, Lead District Chief Manager, stated that in the implementation of District Credit Plan (credit disbursement), disbursement of Rs. 2385.99 crore has taken place against the second quarter target of Rs. 2450.00 crore. Under farm sector disbursement was Rs. 920 crore against the target of Rs. 978.5 crore (achievement of 94%) and under Micro and Small Enterprises, the disbursement was Rs. 180.12 crore against the target of Rs. 199 crore.

Under schemes like Udyogini (for women beneficiaries), Chaithanya (scheme for backward classes), Swawalambana (for minorities), Tribal Sub Plan (for scheduled tribes), Swarnajayathni Grama Swarozgar Yojana and Swarnajayanthi Shahari Rozgar Yojana and special component scheme for scheduled castes, banks have surpassed half yearly targets, he said.

Banks have disbursed Rs. 114.79 crore to 2088 persons under housing segment and disbursed Rs. 43.80 crore to 2057 students under education loan scheme for the second quarter of 2012-13.

Dr. K N Vijay Prakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayath, directed Takat Rao, Project Director, District Urban Development Centre to see to it  that there is greater progress in 'Namma Mane' housing scheme which is a flagship programme of the government. There is a need to sensitize bank branches about the scheme, he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
