Mangalore, Jan 18: Parish priest of St Sebastian Church, Bendur, Fr Antony Serrao has announced the centenary year celebrations of the church, which will commence on January 20.
Speaking at a press meet here, he said that the church had been established in 1912, and was celebrating 100 years of existence.
The opening ceremony of the centenary year will be held January 20, the feast day of St Sebastian, at 4.45 p.m. in the premises of the church. Bishop of Bellary Dr Henry D'Souza will inaugurate and celebrate the festive mass with other priests. The centenary celebrations aim at bringing the people together in faith and unity, with the theme 'Towards deeper faith and fraternity', he said.
The parish currently has 2150 families with a population of 8223 parishioners, while more families are being added to the parish. To mark the centenary year, the parishioners along with the parish priest will launch a medical fund of Rs 1 crore for the benefit of poor and underprivileged families, as well as poor patients belonging to the parish. Various competitions and events will be organised for the parishioners throughout the year to make it memorable, he said.
The closing ceremony of the centenary will be on January 19, 2014.
Assistant parish priest Fr John Baptist Moras, vice-president of the Parish Pastoral Parishad Ronald Walder and secretary Lavina John were present.
