Mangalore, Jan 19: Former leader of Opposition in Legislative Council V S Ugrappa said that the state BJP government, which had failed to appoint Lokayukta in the state from the past 15 months, had no legal or moral right to remain in power.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the final report on illegal mining submitted to the Governor by Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde in July 2011, showed a sum of Rs 22,000 crore being misappropriated and named 776 members in the mining scam.

As per the provisions of Section 12 of the Lokayukta Act, Action-Taken Report should be compiled within 90 days after the submission of the Lokayukta report. However, Lokayukta has not been appointed even after 15 months. This shows the inclination of the BJP government towards sacrificing the development of the state. Development of the state now is moving backwards, he said adding that it was utterly condemnable.

Recovery of the misappropriated funds and prosecution of the named members is the duty of the government, he said.

Speaking on the final award of Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal, which allotted 419 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu and 270 TMC to Karnataka, he urged the BJP government to come clear on its stand on the final award in the Cauvery dispute. The state government has so far not obtained a stay order on the notification of the final award. While senior advocate Fali Nariman has taken a stand that he had no objection for the notification, the state government should declare whether or not it holds the same. If it does, then why was this not declared at the all-party meeting held? If the BJP has even a little concern or commitment for the law of the land, then it should declare its stand on the issue. It owes an explanation to the people of Karnataka, he said.

He also criticised the BJP for its stance on the proposed central university for minorities in the state. Instead of welcoming the progressive decision of establishing a Central University in Srirangapatna, why is the BJP showing interest in opposing it? BJP leaders, who are opposing the establishment of the university, are hindering the development of the state, and sacrificing the interest of the people, he said and added that politics had taken a wrong turn in the state, with increasing self-centered politicians.

“The BJP and the KJP, are responsible for all the corruption and mal-administration in the state. When S M Krishna was the Chief Minister of the state, 39 per cent of the state budget was allocated for irrigation projects, while now it is only 13 per cent,” he said, stating that the current administration's achievements were nil.

Taking about allegations of the Congress being involved in various scams at the Centre, he said that the allegations were politically-driven and baseless.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
