Mangalore, Jan 20: A district-level seminar on the 'Intention of the Constitution and current affairs' was organised by Karnataka Dalit Vidyarthi Okkoota in association with Kannada and Culture department at NGO Hall here on Sunday.
The seminar was inaugurated by chairman of Shree Devi Education Trust A Sadananda Shetty.
Speaking on the occasion, former Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation J R Lobo said that Dr B R Ambedkar fought for social reform and had inculcated the notion of social justice for all while drafting the Constitution. Being the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, he introduced provisions for Scheduled Castes and Tribes. When Dalits are being exploited in other parts of the state and country in the present age, the situation was far worse at the time when the Constitution was drafted, he said.
Stressing on the importance of education, he said that members of Dalit community had to come forward both financially and academically for the social development of the entire community. “Education will give you the nerve and persistence to march ahead in life. Utilise the opportunities that come your way to the fullest, if you want to bring up the community,” he said, encouraging the students gathered to demand for their rights and stand against exploitation.
Former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Harikrishna Punaroor also stressed on education and urged the students to make use of the benefits provided by the government through various laws. Education can wipe out all false practices and discrimination between castes, he said.
Principal of Ganapathi P U College Ratnakar Bannadi also spoke on the occasion.
Various Dalit representatives and students were present during the seminar, which was followed by a cultural and music programme.
