Team Badaga Yedapadavu bags 'Best Village' trophy

Mangalore, Jan 21: Home team 'Badaga Yedapadav' bagged the overall 'Best Village' trophy with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh at the Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Kreedotsava-III villages games tournament which was held over three days, from January 18 to 20, in the fields adjacent to Shasthavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple, Badaga Yedapadav, Mijar, on the outskirts of the city.

The trophy winners were determined on points system with points being awarded on the number of wins recorded by each village in the different game categories. While the winner got 222 points, the second place (Rs. 50,000/-) went to Team Madappady, Sullia with 189 points; third place (Rs. 10,000/-) to Team Sangabettu, Bantwal with 146 points and fourth place (Rs. 5000/-) to Ariyadka, Puttur with 47 points.

Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Kreedotsava-III concluded on 20th January night with a spell binding live music concert by the famous playback singer Rajesh Krishnan and his team. He was accompanied on the stage by singer Dr Shamitha Malnad and a professional dance troupe. The jubilant prize winning team received the trophy amidst much jubilation from the event co-ordinator Vijaynath Vittal Shetty on Sunday night during a brief interlude to the Rajesh Krishnan Music Concert.

There were 40 games in 70 categories with an aggregate prize money of over Rs. 15 lakh. This is the third year of the tournament which is becoming popular year after year. This year there were a record number of 2900 entries and Vijaynath Shetty, Chief Coordinator of the event expressed his gratitude to all concerned for making the event a great success. In addition to celebrities like film stars Shivadwaj, Haripriya and Shubha Poonja who visited the event to encourage the participants on Friday and Saturday, on Sunday the thronging crowds were elated to see their favourite cricketers Munaf Patel, Vinay Kumar, Music Director Guru Kiran, Film Star Prem and Producer Avinash. Former Minister Nagaraj Shetty too visited the mela on Sunday.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. In their inspiring addresses, the guests encouraged the graduating students and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the management, faculty, and students.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
