Mangalore, Jan 24: Police have nabbed one person in connection to stealing jewellery from a temple in Belthangady taluk and recovered gold and silver ornaments from him.
Speaking to media persons at his office on Thursday, Abhishek Goyal, SP, Dakshina Kannada, said that a complaint was registered at Venur Police Station with regard to theft of 4 kg silver and 28 grams of gold ornaments on May 5, 2012, from the Sri Sooryanarayana Temple of Naravi in Belthangady Taluk.
On January 20, 2013, when CPI Bhaskar Rai N G, Venur PSI Abdul Khader and other police personnel were patrolling late in the night at Keddu Junction of Badagakaranduru in Belthangady Taluk, a motorcyclist riding a two-wheeler arrived at the spot. Since he was carrying an iron rod, the cops grew suspicious of him.
On interrogation it was discovered that the man has been robbing ornaments from temples and was responsible for the theft in Naravi temple too.
The accused has been identified as Chandrashekharappa (43) of Davanagere. He has confessed the theft at Naravi temple. There has been theft cases registered against him in the past in Manki, Kumta and Honnavar stations. The police have recovered silver and gold ornaments stolen from the temple which is estimated to cost Rs. 3,00,000. Police have also seized his motorcycle and mobile phone.
