Karnataka governor for disciplined democracy to avert chaos

Bangalore, Jan 26: Karnataka Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj in his address on the 64th Republic Day Saturday advocated discipline in democracy to prevent the country slipping into "chaos and self-destruction".

"Gandhiji insisted on discipline in democracy and enlightenment to check prejudice, ignorance and superstition, which could lead us into chaos and self-destruction," Bhardwaj said in his address here.

Noting that democracy meant the art and science of mobilising physical, economic and spiritual resources of all sections of the people in the service of the common good of all, the governor said in an independent nation there was no place for communalism, separatism, bigotry or untouchability.

"We must strive to ensure social, economic and political independence. For instance, the recent problems faced by women, especially the gang-rape incident in New Delhi recently (Dec 16), should be attended to with sincerity and firmness," the governor said.

He was speaking at the city's Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground where he unfurled the national flag, inspected guard of honour and took salute from armed forces and other contingents. Recalling the supreme sacrifice of the armed and para-military forces to protect the country from adversaries, the former union law minister said governments and civic societies should endeavour  nation building through democratic means.

"In achieving the objective of a welfare state, our democratic institutions such as parliament, state assemblies and local-self government bodies must ensure justice to weaker sections and the rural poor as they are more deserving than others," Bhardwaj asserted.

Lauding the state for achieving significant progress in diverse fields, especially in education, research, science and technology, the governor said the contribution of the knowledge sector, led by IT and biotechnology was immense in terms of jobs, investments and living standards.

"I firmly believe there is no reason why Karnataka should not further emerge as the leading state in the political, economic, social, educational, scientific and technological spheres," Bhardwaj added.

After hoisting the tricolour, Bhardwaj went around the ground in an open jeep and received salute from the armed forces and other contingents, including battalions of the state police, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Bharat Scouts and Guides (BS&G) and hundreds of school children, with military and police bands in attendance.

About 8,000 people, including children who assembled at the venue to celebrate the occasion, greeted and cheered the forces and other participants. After the governor's address in English, contingents of the military, police platoons, battalions of security agencies, NCC, BS&G and about 3,000 boys and girls from various schools across the city and district staged a march-past.

The people in the ground and thousands of viewers watching the proceedings live on all local television channels were later treated to an hour-long children's cultural programme and daring feats on motor-cycles by the military police and acrobatic teams, which drew maximum applause.

Elaborate arrangements were made to ensure peace and order. About 2,000 police personnel were deployed in and around the ground to provide security.

Pomp and pageantry also marked the celebrations of the historic day across the state.

Mangaluru: Disgruntled BJP leader and former MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, who is contesting the legislative council election as an independent candidate from the South West Graduates constituency, said the BJP has adopted the “godfather culture” of the Congress.

Bhat told reporters here on Saturday, that he has not tried to appease any senior BJP leaders to get a party ticket to contest the MLC poll.

“I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My contesting may have a negative impact on the BJP. However, I want to go back to the BJP after winning this election,” Bhat said, and refused to answer the actual reason for the denial of a BJP ticket to him.

“I have no idea who played from behind that I was denied a ticket for the MLC poll.

Earlier, the BJP had a culture of selecting candidates for MLA and MLC polls by seeking the opinion of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at mandal and district levels.

Now the situation is such that even if one person’s name was sent from the state, the final list will be different. The godfather culture of the Congress has stretched into our party too. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence I am contesting the election,” Bhat said.

To a query, Bhat said that he has not contacted by BJP leaders after deciding to contest the MLC poll.

“I have already requested all leaders that I should get the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have told them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. The ultimate aim of my contesting the election is that senior leaders should know the injustice that honest party workers are facing in the BJP,” he said.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.

Naturals Ice Cream founder Raghunandan Kamath passed away following a brief illness. Born to a mango vendor in a village in Mangaluru, Kamath went on to establish Naturals, an ice cream parlour estimated to be worth Rs 400 crore today.

"Our thoughts on the sad demise of our patron and founder of Naturals Ice Cream, Late Raghunandan Kamath. Indeed a very sad and unfortunate day for us," the company said.

Mr Kamath grew up helping his father in selling mangoes in a village Karnataka's Mangaluru. This was when he learned the art of picking the ripe fruit, plucking it, sorting it, and preserving it.

As the legend goes, a young 14-year-old Kamath boarded a train from Mangaluru and came to Mumbai (then Bombay).

After working at his brother’s restaurant, Kamath had an idea — if ice creams have fruit flavours, why can’t they have real fruits. He decided to fill this void in the market. But unsure of whether customers would come, he began his business with serving pav-bhaji as the main dish and the ice cream as an add on.

His first ice cream parlour was launched in 1984 in Juhu, with the initial menu featuring around 12 flavours, each being a testament to the knowledge he acquired during the time he assisted his father in Mangaluru.

The demand kept growing and he opened five more outlets in 1994. Currently, it has over 165 outlets across 15 cities.

His story was captured expansively in ‘Intelligent Fanatics of India’, a book co-authored by Mumbai-based journalist Pooja Bhula.

Inspired by his mother's techniques, Kamath also developed innovative machines to streamline production and ensure consistency, notes the company website.
