Mangalore, Jan 29: Cooking gas is turning out to be all the precious and while apprehensions have always been there with regard to the weight of the gas while delivery, the officials say that the customers do have the right to weigh the cylinders during delivery from gas agencies.

Addressing a grievances meet organized by Gas Matthu Padithara Balakedaarara Vedike, at Town Hall, Mangalore on Monday, Bharat Petroleum Company Representative Venugopal said that there are several complaints with regard to variation in the weight of the cylinder on delivery but not many consumers know that they have the right to check the weight of the cylinders.

“In every gas supplying vehicle, there will be equipments and weight checking facilities available. Customers must ask the distribution personnel to carry out a weight check of the gas cylinders before them,” Mr. Venugopal said.

Another citizen complained that certain gas agencies are forcing people to buy stoves and other materials, threatening them of not providing with gas cylinders if they refuse to do so. Responding to the question,  Mr. Venugopal said that in LPG centres, certain allied facilities and equipments are provided to people purely on an optional basis. If there is any attempt made to make people buy them forcefully, a complaint should be registered with the sales officer of the gas agency concerned, he said.

Sharanabasappa, Deputy Director, Department of Food and Civil Supplies, DK, exhorted people present in the gathering on the occasion to stop applying for ration cards merely for the sake of an identification proof. “Ration cards should be meant for receiving ration. Why don't you question the banks or anyone who demands ration card as address proof as to whether there is a directive from the government to do so?”, he said.

P B Harish Rai, President, DK District Working Journalists' Association, Mangalore, demanded officials present in the gathering to provide people with statistics of gas cylinders being sold in black by people themselves and not shy away from their responsibilities. He also asked as to whether there is a government directive which states that gas cylinders must be supplied only after 21 days or whether this rule has been framed by gas agencies themselves.

On the issue of inconveniences caused to people with respect to gas delivery from a gas agency in Ullal raised by a citizen, U T Khader, MLA, said that a single gas agency takes care of people's needs from Ullal to Mudipu and suggested the officials present at the meet to set up more agencies in the region and divide the area of supply so that there are lesser customers to deal with.

Mr. Khader also suggested that a 'Gas Adaalath' be held in every Assembly constituency once in every three months so that people's complaints are dealt with effectively.

An online memorandum was submitted to M Veerappa Moily, Union Petroleum Minister, on the occasion via e-mail by the Vedike. The memorandum included demands such as steps to subsidize 12 domestic gas cylinders a year, holding of a survey in every Taluk to set up more gas agencies for the benefit of the public, provision of filling cylinders on time for people, setting up of complaint cells in local governing bodies, compulsory handing over of 'Gas Card' and cash bill along with the date of delivery at the time of delivery of gas cylinders, continuance of two gas connections obtained legally by customers and non-cancellation of these connections, provision of fire extinguishers in gas cylinder delivery vehicles etc.

Shashiraj Rao Kavoor, Advocate, Consumer Court, Mangalore, Dharmendra K, President, Gas Mattu Padithara Balakedaarara Vedike, Mangalore, Muhammad Siddiq Jakribettu, Chief Secretary of the Vedike, were present among others.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
