Mangalore, Jan 30: The Karnataka Janatha Paksha (KJP) led by former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has decided to stand by the people of Tulunadu and oppose Nethravathi river diversion.

KJP Leader Ramachandra Baikampady, addressing the induction ceremony of members into KJP at Town Hall in Mangalore on Wednesday said that the river diversion is detrimental to Tulunadu hence must be opposed.

Coming down heavily on former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Mr Baikampady said that Mr. Gowda had not only betrayed Mr. Yeddyurappa who made him the Chief Minister, but has also cheated the people of Tulunadu by agreeing to divert Nethravathi river.

“He (Mr. Gowda), in an attempt to appease Deve Gowda, agreed to divert our Nethravathi river to Hasan and Ramanagara districts without even thinking of the implication this could have on the people living here. We have paucity of drinking water during dry season. The project will hijack us from the little water that is left for us now,” he said.

Heaping praises on Mr. Yeddyurappa, Mr. Baikampady said that it was under him that Karnataka witnessed its 'golden era' in administration.

“It was during Mr. Yeddyurappa's tenure that Karnataka was named the second best state in the country in terms of development in a report prepared by the Congress ruled central government. After Mr. Yeddyurappa we had two Chief Ministers from the same BJP. But today, Karnataka has slipped from second spot to eleventh spot”, Mr. Baikampady said.

Mariamma Thomas, member of the State Committee, KJP, said in her address that it was Mr. Yeddyurappa who envisioned and brought to force projects like Bhagyalaxmi Scheme, cycles for girl students, the 'Sandhya Suraksha' scheme and 108 Emergency Ambulance service. Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) received Rs. 300 crores when Mr. Yeddyurappa was at the helm. The concretization of roads and setting up of footpaths in the city have been carried out primarily because of the grants Mr. Yeddyurappa gave and the BJP as a party had no role to play in it, she said.

Ms. Thomas also said that KJP believes in providing equal opportunities for all sections of the society and that the Congress and the JD(S) are mere lip service sympathizers of minorities.

Yogish Shetty and Jyotika Jain, formerly with the JD(S), were among the activists inducted into KJP on the occasion.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
