Mangalore, Feb 1: There are no alarm bells with regard to water shortage at Thumbe dam yet and the city is not likely to be hit by water scarcity this time around as severely as it did last year, said Dr. Harish Kumar, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

Replying to query on water availability, during the MCC monthly meeting, the Commissioner said that the MCC has make all necessary arrangements to tackle water woes this time, unlike last year.

During the meeting Corporator Mr. Naveen drew the attention of the council to the approaching dry season and asked as to whether the Corporation had taken any steps to ensure that the city is not hit by water scarcity.

In response, Mr. Kumar said that the severe water crisis that the city faced last year was due to lack of rain in January/February. “We expect showers this time. There is overflow at the dam at the moment. We have conducted a meeting of all dam owners and it has been made clear to them that they cannot release water without the permission of the Deputy Commissioner. Water scarcity should hopefully not be a problem this year”, he said.

The issue of resuming 'Tiger Operation' to tackle street vendors was raised by a councilor to which Mr. Kumar said that the MCC is not thinking of restarting the operation at present.

“The Supreme Court has said in its order that it is left to the respective state governments to formulate rules with regard to footpath vendors. The state government has not finalized regulations in this regard yet. Because of the 'Tiger Operation', a sense of anger had cropped up in people regarding our approach and we were being perceived as anti-poor”, the Commissioner said.

He however said that vendors need to be told about the proposed Vending and Non-vending zones. “They will have to be given identity cards from the MCC so that they can go about their selling in the permitted vending zones”, Mr. Kumar said.

Mayor Gulzar Banu, Amitha Kala, Deputy Mayor  were present.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
