Mangalore, Feb 2: The elaborate activities of the three-day gala that was 'Aloysian Fest – 2013' drew to a close on Saturday with the valedictory and prize distribution ceremony at St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

Since a total of six distinct fests were held together over a period of three days, six colleges emerged victorious, winning in individual fests such as 'Acme', 'Art-Beat', 'Spin-Out', 'Imprints', 'Astitva' and Aloysiad'.

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony, Deputy General Manager of Central Bank of India N K Balakrishnan said that with regard to the development of personality, the perception of education had changed over a period of time. The focus is entirely on intellectual development and we forget to develop other skills, he said, adding that the college fest provided a platform for students to improve their personality and cultural development.

“As youngsters, this age is the right time for you to mould your personality, develop your character and thought-process and build a strong foundation which will be building blocks for you tomorrow. To be future leaders, you have to continue your learning process till your last breath. Take your work as your passion and love what you do to be more productive,” he advised youngsters.

The experience a person gains turns knowledge into wisdom and skills into expertise. Education will continue to evolve and change; however, if we decline to collaborate and evolve with it, we will be unable to move towards advancement, he said.

Sharing their opinion and experiences during the fest, students from participating colleges said that they found the mega-event innovative and well-organised. The tasks were unique and challenging, which facilitated a lot of learning, said one of the students. A participant of Astitva, Junaid said that the fest was 'a cut above the rest.'

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
