Mangalore, Feb 7: Amidst people's concern over the growing threat of drug mafia in the coastal districts, Mangalore police on Wednesday evening carried out raids across the city. Police squads visited several shops, petty-shops, hotels, bars and lodges and carried out a search.
Meanwhile, a high-level meeting at the DC's office on Wednesday decided to tackle the drug menace on the lines of the successful anti ragging campaign which curbed the menace in educational institutions.
Presiding over a meeting, Deputy Commissioner N Prakash approved MCC Commissioner Harish Kumar's suggestions on appointing counsellors and academic advisors for each class to prevent students from becoming victims of drug abuse.
Prakash said lecturers of PU and degree colleges and hostel wardens have the responsibility of keeping an eye on students to prevent them from turning into drug addicts.
The district administration, police and other departments will organise a year-long programme to curb the rampant drug menace on campus, he said.
He also sought the cooperation of parents and non-governmental organisations addiction from society.
The DC said that he would seek cooperation from PU and degree college principals at a meeting planned on Friday to counter drug peddling.
Deputy Commissioner of Police(Law and order) Mutturaya said 37 colleges were conducting regular meetings to ensure that students do not take drugs. However, after the death of Sneha, it is clear that such exercises seem to be ineffective.
The police will take up the responsibility of deputing a Deputy Superintendent level officer at such meetings, he added.
Additional Deputy Commissioner K A Dayananda, District Health officer O R Srirangappa and other officials were present at the meeting.
