Mangalore, Feb 19: The BJP will contest in all seats at all levels in the upcoming local body polls, said Monappa Bhandary, MLC and Spokesperson, BJP, DK.

Addressing media persons at a news conference at the district BJP office in Mangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Bhandary said that in the last local body elections the BJP had refrained from fielding its candidates for some of the seat.

“Of a total of 157 seats in all local bodies in the district, we had contested for 109 seats and won 84 in all, including 35 in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC). There were a few places like the Moodbidri Town Municipal Council where we contested for only 6 seats and won 4 out of them. We had a mutual understanding with the JD(S) for the other seats there. This time, there will be no alliances and we will be contesting all seats at all levels”, Mr. Bhandary said.

The BJP's performance as the ruling party in local bodies has been impressive, Mr. Bhandary said and stated that the party is confident of retaining power in MCC.

“We have been able to solve the drinking water problem that the city had been facing earlier. The state government has been generous in providing grants to MCC which have been utilized effectively for the city's development”, Mr. Bhandary said.

On a query on the selection of candidates for polls, Mr. Bhandary said that a preparatory meet of the party was held on Monday in the presence of Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, MLAs, office bearers of the party and Morcha members to discuss the issue. Ward-wise meetings have been held already. The selection of candidates for election ticket will be made on the basis of the majority opinion of the party workers of respective wards. The final list of candidates is expected to be out by February 22, Mr. Bhandary said.

'Dhananjay should mind his own business'

Mr. Bhandary slammed KJP leader and Yeddyurappa loyalist Dhananjay Kumar for his comments on D V Sadananda Gowda joining JD(S).

“He is busy hurling hypothetical allegations. His comments were unwarranted and unnecessary. Although we gave him position and respect in BJP, he left all of it and joined the KJP which we have no objection to. He must however mind his own business and refrain from commenting on things which do not concern him. Sadananda Gowda is a part of BJP and will continue to be so. It seems to me that Dhananjay Kumar is planning to join JD(S) himself because he has already been demoted from being the President of KJP to Secretary. Making such statements does not befit a leader of his caliber”, Mr. Bhandary said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
