Mangalore, Feb 26: Akshay R Bhandary, who topped the first semester of VTU examinations conducted in December 2012 – January 2013, was felicitated with nine other toppers studying in Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management in a special function organised in the Sahyadri campus.
College toppers in the Chemistry cycle Tilak P, Rajisha Rajan, Swathi Kamath, Midhun K and Kushala Kumari and toppers in the Physics cycle Vardhana M, Rashmi Rai, Lavanya K and Naga Tejaswi were felicitated in the function.
Speaking after felicitating the students, Centre Head of TCS, Bangalore E S Chakravarthy said that there were plenty of opportunities in the country and globally for engineering students who passed out with quality education.
“Quality education is defined by strong academic fundamentals, application of those fundamentals and an understanding of the industry around you. Build up your fundamentals and ability to apply them. Build communication and articulation skills, as the art of articulation plays a big role in the success of an engineer. Another essential element is the culture that you nurture throughout your life. Your image depends on three currencies – intellectual, social and organisational currency. Every successful individual is a combination of these currencies. One should acquire the culture of taking challenges and reaching targets and also the culture of teamwork,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of Bhandary Foundation M Manjunath Bhandary said that it was a matter of pride that a student from Sahyadri had scored 94 per cent in the first semester in the history of Visvesvaraya Technological University.
“Achieving is not a great thing, but maintaining it takes great effort. Along with academic excellence, overall development is also important for becoming successful,” he said, stressing on the importance of value-added courses.
“If you want to be different, even your thinking and attitude should be different,” he told the students.
With an overall percentage of 94.06, Akshay Bhandary ranked first among over a lakh students studying in around 220 engineering colleges in the state.

Principal Dr Umesh M Bhushi, and Vinay Biradar and Arun G K from TCS Bangalore were also present on the occasion.
