AIYF State secretary K. Rajan said on Sunday that the Federation would organise protest marches against the State government's neglect of the “genuine” demands raised by the agitating Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munnani (EPJM) activists.
After enquiring after septuagenarian D. Surendranath, who is fasting at the venue, he said that the State and Union governments were acting at the behest of the pesticide lobby by delaying justice to the victims.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) government's decision to suspend relief packages after five years was inhuman and unacceptable. The assurances by the ministers after visiting select endosulfan-affected panchayats were not fulfilled, he alleged.
EPJM convener Ambalathara Kunhikrishnan said that mothers of the endosulfan victims might join the protest if the State government failed to give an assurance in writing that that the protestors' demands would be accepted.
He said the activists had to re-launch the agitation because the promises made to a delegation led by P. Karunakaran, MP, in Thiruvananthapuram in August last year were not fulfilled.
“We will suspend the strike only after the government accedes to our demands in writing,” he said.
P. Karunakaran, MP, and district panchayat president P. P. Shyamala Devi visited Dr. Surendranath.
