Ruling BJP, main opposition Congress and the Janata Dal(S) are main contenders in the local body election, which would also have independents playing major role in power politics in the elections.

While Congress is looking to make major inroads into BJP strong hold in the urban areas and emerge a major gainer, fledgling Karnataka Janata Party led by B S Yeddyurappa and BSR Congress of former minister B Srimalu will be testing electoral waters for the first time.
Nearly 8.5 million votes will decide the fate of nearly 22,000 candidates, who have entered the fray in 208 local bodies, including seven city corporations, to elect 4,976 ward members.
The elections are being held in seven major cities barring the tech hub of Bangalore, besides tier 2 cities and towns.
The State Election Commission had ordered public campaign to end 48 hours before the polls, which was protested against by some political parties including the ruling BJP. Earlier, public campaign ended before 24 hours all the elections held in the state.
In a press note, the State Election Commission has said that under Section 41 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, all political party leaders, star campaigners and contesting candidates are strictly prohibited from holding public meeting 48 hours before polling starts. The polling starts at 7 a.m. on March 7.
