Mangalore: The Mangalore City Corporation polls this time is going to be a nail-biting one because all speculations and predictions may turn out to be damp squib with the kind of scenario that has been unfurling at the political front here.

Many feel that no party will emerge victorious and come to power with clear majority. The inclination of the electoral is the biggest mystery which is getting difficult to decode.

In the MCC which has a total strength of 60 members mandates a party to win 31 seats to form clear majority. However, this matter does not come into consideration when the issue is of electing the Mayor, where even MPs and MLAs cast their vote. Hence election of Mayor also depends on the number of MLAs and MPs a particular party has in the region.

In the MCC the MLAs and MPs are mainly from the BJP. To be precise there are two MLAs, four MLCs and one MP from the BJP. Going by this calculation, even if BJP wins 30 seats in the council, it is on the winning side. This calculation seems a bit disappointing for the Congress which has one MLA and one MLC in hand right now. The situation might or may not improve for the Congress in the upcoming Assembly polls but that holds no consequence for the MCC polls.

The Congressmen feel that no matter what the figures point at, the fact is that the people in the Corporation limits are almost on the verge of rising rebel against the ruling party. Hike in taxes, including water cess has irked the people. This anger will be cashed on by the Congress.

However, the major drawback for the Congress has been the disorganized approach of the party. The way the BJP party workers plunged into action at the ward level is a lesson for all the parties including the Congress, which was busy clearing the tangles created by candidate selection and campaign process. Many say that the BJP corporators have done more work in their wards when compared to the Congress corporators.

It is said that the BJP and the Sangha volunteers had conducted door-to-door visit to meet the voters almost thrice, but the Congress did not even complete a single house visit campaign.

“The biggest disadvantage for the Congress is the fact that there are more leaders than partyworkers. There are more of proxy partyworkers who simple loiter on streets in front of the leaders and collect money at the end of the day. They do not have genuine partyworkers,” says a source on conditions of anonymity.

While the two national parties are building their castles of cards, several others are ready to tickle them and crash the castles. JD(S), SDPI, KJP and CPI(M) are all in fray to splash water on the BJP and Congress dreams. One has to only wait and watch as to who will bell the cat.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
