Mangalore, Mar 8: Thousands descended on the streets of Mangalore in a first-of-its-kind massive rally against the atrocities and exploitation of women in present times, on the occasion of International Women's Day on Friday.

Women's organisations and self-help groups, volunteers, students and several others from Mangalore and various parts of the state came together and joined hands in an effort to bring about change in the way women are looked at and treated in the society,

Jointly organised by Forum Against Atrocities on Women (FAAW) and Network of Women's Groups, the rally, comprising of women and men from various spheres of life, was flagged off from Bunts Hostel Circle by president of Koraga Abhivruddhi Sanghagala Okkuta Susheela Nada from Kundapur.

Various groups such as People's Union for Civil Liberties, DEEDS, Breakthrough Foundation, Spandana Infant Mary Convent, Billawa Mahila Sangha, Asare Women's Foundation, Forward Trust, St Aloysius College, St Agnes College, Besant Women's College and Hira Women's College from Mangalore, and other like-minded organisations from across the state participated in the rally, which concluded at Karavali Utsav ground at Lalbagh, followed by a huge public meeting.

The public meeting was inaugurated by Bhanwari Devi from Bhatteri of Rajasthan, a survivor of gang-rape and whose subsequent legal battle led to the constitution of Vishaka Guidelines by the Supreme Court against sexual harassment at the workplace. Following the inauguration, she sung verses of a song in Hindi to inspire women to collectively rise up against exploitation and injustice, at the public meeting.

Addressing the huge gathering, she urged the people to speak out against the violence and atrocities they have been subjected to. “How long will we remain mute and tolerant against the outrageous crimes which endanger us? Women should come forward and continue to fight unitedly and steadfastly against all forms of injustice in the society. We should raise our voices and fight for our rights and justice,” she proclaimed.

“The government should ensure safety of women. Exercise your votes only in favour of those politicians who have brought reforms for women. Ask them what they have done to improve the condition of women, and vote only when you get justice and your rights,” she advised the women in the gathering.

Several women activists and women belonging to women organisations shared their thoughts and views on the rising atrocities being committed on women.

Speaking on the occasion, veteran Kannada writer Sara Aboobaker expressed her satisfaction that women in the state were no longer keeping quiet against atrocities, and were coming forward in large numbers to protest against them.

In her introductory address, Sabiha Bhoomi Gowda spoke on the significance of hosting the massive public meeting in Mangalore, against the backdrop of the homestay attack and other instances of moral policing.

Susheela Nada, Sukri Bommanagowda of Halakki Vokkaligara Sangha, editor of 'Anupama' magazine Shahnaz M, Rathi Rao of Civic Workers' Association, Bangalore, Rathnamma of Garment and Textile Workers Union, Nisha of Karnataka Sexual Minorities Forum and others spoke on the occasion. Karwar, May 5: What commenced as a mere exchange of words between spouses swiftly transmuted into a calamitous ordeal, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of their innocent offspring. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded in the serene confines of Halamaddy village in the picturesque expanse of Dandeli, nestled within the idyllic expanse of Uttara Kannada district.

In the throes of a fervent dispute with her spouse, the aggrieved wife, succumbing to an overwhelming surge of emotions, callously propelled their tender six-year-old progeny into the somber depths of a nearby canal, thereafter alerting the local populace to her grievous act.

Promptly apprised of the distressing occurrence by concerned bystanders, the authorities were swiftly summoned to the scene to confront the harrowing aftermath.

Responding to the distress call, the diligent officers of Dandeli rural police swiftly converged upon the site where the innocent child had been cast into the unforgiving waters of the canal, subsequently effecting the retrieval of the child's lifeless form.

Regrettably, it was discerned that a portion of the child's remains had been tragically claimed by the lurking jaws of a predatory crocodile.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.
