The hunger strike took a new turn on Saturday as agitators prevented the police from arresting and shifting fasting environmentalist A. Mohan Kumar after his health condition turned worse.
Activists of EPJM resisted the police move to shift Mr. Mohan Kumar to the General Hospital following the advice from doctors who examined him earlier in the day. When the police insisted that Mr. Mohan Kumar be taken in an ambulance, the environmentalist refused, saying that his health condition was normal and did not warrant any medical attention for the moment.
The situation turned worse after Kasaragod tahsildar Shashidara Shetty came with the District Collector's order seeking Mohan Kumar's arrest in the light of doctor's advice. The activist refused again to concede to the request. He said he would continue his fast even at the hospital if he were shifted there.
The EPJM activists, led by its convener Ambalathara Kunhikrishnan, condemned the police move and said it was suppressing the agitation being staged in a peaceful manner.
The administration has deployed additional police force around the strike venue near the new bus station premises here.
