Mangalore, Mar 15: The level of awareness among people of Dakshina Kannada district concerning consumer rights is unsatisfactory, said N Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, DK.

Speaking after inaugurating a programme as part of the 'World Consumer Day' jointly organized by the district administration and DK District Federation of Consumer Organizations in Mangalore on Friday, Mr.Prakash said that although there is a decent level of awareness about various matters among people of Dakshina Kannada, awareness with regard to consumer rights is not satisfactory.

“Youth have to be more aware of consumer rights. There are hundreds of day to day instances where consumer rights are violated in ways of faulty measurements, sale of products at rates higher than the prescribed MRP, poor quality of products, defective services etc, which are not paid attention to. People are not aware that they can even get quantity of petrol and diesel checked in petrol bunks before filling them in their vehicles”, Mr. Prakash said.

C Mallikarjuna, Regional Transport Officer (RTO), DK, said that he is aware of the problem of passengers not being given tickets in buses. “We have already given computerized ticket machines to a few buses. By next year, we will make sure that every bus operates with the ticket machines”, he said.

Stating that people's frustration at honking of buses is understandable, Mr. Mallikarjuna said that bus drivers and conductors also work under pressure and deadlines, which makes them resort to honking and behaving rudely with passengers at times. The RTO has taken initiatives to replace loud horns in buses with reasonably audible ones. “About 60-65% of such horns have been replaced. We will implement it cent per cent soon”, he said.

M G Salian, President, DK District Federation of Consumer Organizations, said that the common consumer today is lethargic and unwilling to fight for consumer rights. Attempts are being made to create consumer rights awareness among people, especially students, he said.

“We have 56 Consumer Clubs in schools across the district. We guide MSW students at PG level in colleges to create consumer rights awareness. It is a misconception that the District Consumer Redressal Forum is a toothless body. The government, after recent amendments, has given the Forum First Class Magistrate powers. It has enough teeth to bite. It can even order imprisonment to the guilty”, he said.

Students who excelled at their projects on consumer right awareness in schools and colleges in activities conducted by the DK District Federation of Consumer Organizations were awarded with prizes on the occasion.

Sharana Basappa, Deputy Director, Department of Food and Civil Supplies, DK, Dr. Laxminarayana Bhatta, Principal, University College, Mangalore, were also present.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.
