Mangalore, Mar 15: Protesters belonging to BJP and other Hindutva organisations swooped down in front of Kavoor police station in large numbers on Friday morning, demanding the suspension of Kavoor SI Umesh Kumar within 48 hours, for "injuring" four persons including BJP ex-corporator Sharath Kumar during lathi charge.

Two police personnel identified as Mohith Kumar and Vishwanath also sustained injuries during the incident.

Clash broke out near Kunjathbail junction on Thursday night between the Congress and the BJP members when few miscreants pelted stones at a victory procession of newly elected Congress corporator K Mohammed (Kunjathbail North) in the local civic body elections held last week.

Following the clashes, police arrived at the spot and was compelled to resort to lathi charge to bring the situation under control by dispersing the mob. The incident is said to have occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Police teams kept a tight vigil in the area to prevent any more untoward incidents.

After intervening, the police supposedly took into custody three youths including BJP ex-corporator Sharath Kumar in connection with the clashes and brought them to the police station. It is said that the three were injured during lathi charge by the police and had to be admitted to a hospital.

A sole vegetable stall near Kavoor junction was also torched by unidentified miscreants possibly in connection with the same issue. According to Abbas, the owner of the shop, vegetables worth Rs 40,000 have been damaged. Few shops remained closed on Friday in fear of the same.

Demonstration

Staging a demonstration on Friday, the protestors alleged that Kavoor SI Umesh Kumar and police constable Hariprasad had inflicted injuries on Sharath Kumar, Prashanth and Jay Amin during lathi charge and demanded the suspension of sub-inspector Umesh Kumar within 48 hours.

Another person Pramod was reportedly injured by the same SI Umesh when he protested against arrest of Sharath and others, outside the Kavoor station on Thursday. Umanath Kotian and other leaders held discussions with DCP (Law & Order) M Muthuraya demanding the suspension of SI Umesh Kumar. The gathered protestors stayed put till noon, and dispersed after being promised of action from higher police authorities.

RSS leader Prakash S, Shrikar Prabhu, Sharan Pumpwell, and several others were present during the demonstration.

Protesters' version

Whereas, according to Sharath Kumar, who was admitted to a private hospital after injuries in the lathi charge, the ones who had pelted stones were those who were participating in the victory procession.

“The Congress members were told that they should not drink and celebrate near the pedestal or the 'Katte'. Despite this, one of the climbed on it and began celebrating. Someone threw stones at the Ayyappa mandir near the circle. I requested the police to grant protection to the mandir, but there was no action taken. Instead, the police resorted to lathi charge on three of us and seized our bikes. Later, they took us into custody and brought us to the police station. They (the police) should have given protection to the katte, but failed in doing so. They did not allow me to even register a complaint,” he said, adding that following the incident SI Umesh Kumar inflicted injuries on another fellow mate Pramod when he tried to protest against them.

Pamod had received severe injuries on his head and is currently recuperating in the ICU of the hospital.

Hubballi, Apr 23: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday spoke to father of slain student Neha Hiremath over phone and said "sorry" over his daughter's killing, and assured that "we will be on your side".

The Chief Minister also informed Niranjan Hiremath, who is also a Congress councillor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, about the government's decision to hand over the murder case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and setting up a special court to fast-track trial.

"Niranjan... very sorry. We will be on your side," Siddaramaiah told Hiremath over the phone call during state's Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil's visit to Hiremath's house here.

In the conversation on Patil's phone with speakers on, Siddaramaiah can be heard informing Hiremath about the CID probe and setting up a special court.

"It is a serious offence... setting up a special court will ensure punishment for the accused person."

Hiremath thanked Siddaramaiah on behalf of his family well-wishers and the community for handing over the case to CID and setting up a special court "...ensure there is an order at the earliest and provide us justice," he said, as he also thanked Patil, Home Minister G Parameshwara, local Congress MLA Prasad Abbayya and others for their support.

Replying to this, Siddaramaiah said, "We will ensure it, at the earliest."

In a shocking incident, Neha Hiremath (23), was stabbed to death on the campus of BVB College last Thursday. The accused Fayaz Khondunaik, who fled from the scene, was arrested by the police subsequently.

Neha was a first year Master of Computer Application (MCA) student and Fayaz was earlier her classmate.

Siddaramaih on Monday had announced his government has decided to hand over the investigation into the incident to the Crime Investigation Department, and to set up a special court for speedy disposal of the case.

The case of brutal murder, which sparked widespread outrage, has snowballed into a political slugfest between ruling Congress and opposition BJP.

While the ruling party has tried to project it as an incident with personal angle, the saffron party has called it a "love jihad" case and has said it's a testimony of deterioration of law and order in the state.

Earlier, Siddarmaiah's statement that the murder was due to "personal reasons" and Home Minister G Parameshwara's comments that the duo was in love, has elicited sharp reactions from Hiremath and family members and opposition parties.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is being pushed towards a “slow death” inside Tihar jail by denying him insulin and consultations with his doctor.

Kejriwal, who has Type-2 diabetes, has been asking for insulin and a video conferencing with his family doctor but his requests are being denied by the jail administration, party spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said in a press conference.

"I want to say with full responsibility that a conspiracy is underway for the slow death of Kejriwal," Bharadwaj claimed citing blood sugar readings of the Chief Minister in jail.

He also slammed the Tihar administration, BJP, Centre and Delhi LG for allegedly denying insulin to Kejriwal and said the Delhi Chief Minister had been suffering from diabetes for the last 20-22 years.

On Friday, the chief minister council Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said Kejriwal has not been administered insulin to control his sugar levels since his arrest, terming it “shocking” and “alarming”.

The ED had on Thursday claimed before the court that Kejriwal was eating food high in sugar like mangoes and sweets every day, despite having Type-2 diabetes, to create grounds for medical bail.

Kejriwal, however, refuted the ED’s claims by asserting before a court that the food he consumed was in conformity with the diet chart prepared by his doctor.

“Out of 48 meals sent from home, only three times mangoes were there…,” Singhvi told the court.

Bharadwaj said Kejriwal was allowed by the court to use a machine in the jail to monitor his daily blood sugar levels.

"Overall, it was a conspiracy to finish Kejriwal so his multiple organ damage and when he comes out of jail after 2-4 months he goes for treatment of kidney, heart and other organs," said Bharadwaj, who holds the portfolio of health in Delhi government.
