Mangalore, Mar 16: Seva Bharathi, a non-profit service organisation in Mangalore, organised a programme to commemorate its bi-decennial year of existence, at Town Hall here on Friday.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Chancellor of NITTE University Dr N Vinay Hegde said that working for charity should be seen as a duty. “Money is indeed necessary for charitable work, but to aid noble deeds, help will arrive from various quarters by people unseen. We should aim to stand up on our feet through our own efforts, without hoping for grants from the government,” he said adding that god looks at differently abled persons with greater love. “These children are blessed to have provided 'normal' people a chance to serve the society through them,” he added.
In his presidential address, president of Ramakrishna Mutt Swami Poornakamananda said that God did not reside merely in idols, temples or mosques. “He resides in everyone. The divinity in each person should be honoured and respected, and devotion should be shown without differentiating between people. We should serve Him in ways such as donations and charity along with rendering service to the deserving and needy, with humility. We ourselves benefit by rendering social service. It is something where one learns and experiences more than he can give,” he said.
On the occasion, founder-trustee of Seva Bharathi Vasudev Shenoy and trustee Sumathi Shenoy were felicitated for their relentless social service and other endeavours.
This was followed by a cultural programme where scenes from Hindu mythology were depicted by differently-abled students of Chetana Child Development Centre and dance by Roman & Catherine School for the Blind.
