
He said the NHRC had recommended Rs.5 lakh each to the completely bedridden and kin of the deceased and Rs.3 lakh each to the seriously ailing. As of now, the authorities had paid only Rs.1.5 lakh and Rs.1 lakh respectively to 1,315 of the 4,182 victims as the first instalment.
Having crossed 26 days of its strike, with environmentalist A. Mohan Kumar continuing his hunger strike for the 12th day on Friday, the EPJM was planning to launch a State-wide agitation, he said. The EPJM would form a 'human wall' on March 18 near the new bus station, where the hunger strike is being held, to mark the completion of a month of the agitation. The hunger strike programme on Friday was inaugurated by writer T. Shobhana. Several leading personalities visited the strike venue to express their solidarity. Meanwhile, the condition of the fasting environmentalist was causing concern, Mr. Kunhikrishnan said.
