Mangalore, Mar 16: The 'Street Sweeping Machine' service of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) was inaugurated by N Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, DK, and interim administrator of MCC, on Saturday.
The self-propelled vaccum sweeping machine meant for sweeping concrete roads and other flat surface roads has two side brushes and one front brush with central vaccum. It has been procured by MCC at a cost of Rs 57 lakhs. The machine also has a provision for water spraying.
The sweeping capacity of the machine for a road width of 2.5m is 10-12 kms per hour to go with a fuel consumption of 7-8 litres per hour.
Waste segregation
The Deputy Commissioner also distributed waste bins as part of the MCC's solid Waste segregation project.
The MCC has taken Court and Mannagudda wards as pilot wards for this project. A total of 7800 bins (3900 bins of yellow and green colours for inorganic and organic wastes respectively) of 10 L capacity, 600 wheeled bins of 120 L capacity (300 bins of blue and green each) and 50 wheeled bins of 240 L (25 each of green and blue colour) are being distributed by MCC for the purpose.
Further 2 bins (yellow and green) of 10 L will be given to each household free of cost. To each apartment, 2 bins (120L / 240L – Green and blue) will be given to be placed at its basement. The households are expected to segregate their garbage into organic and inorganic wastes, store their organic solid wastes in green bins and inorganic wastes in yellow/blue bins. The organic waste collected will be routed to 2 Tpd Biogas Plant located near Urwa market. The inorganic matter will be taken to MCC Sanitary landfill and compost plant.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prakash said that such a solid waste management initiative has not seen success in other parts of the country. However, Mangalore being a city of people with higher awareness levels, with the cooperation of citizens, the attempt can achieve success.
Dr. Harish Kumar, Commissioner, MCC, was also present.
