Bangalore, Mar 18: Election committee of the State Congress on Sunday set the parameters for selecting candidates for the coming Assembly elections, which includes barring those with criminal records from contesting the polls and according priority to youth.

The committee, which concluded its two-day meeting at a resort near Devanahalli, unanimously passed a resolution not to give the tickets to those with criminal records. It was also resolved to ensure social justice by giving priority to backward classes and minorities. Candidates belonging to the minority communities had performed well in the recently-held ULB polls.

The parameters have been laid down as per the directions issued by party vice president Rahul Gandhi recently. Karnataka is the first big State that will be going to polls after Rahul's elevation as the vice president.

Sources said the committee, comprising 59 senior leaders, was almost unanimous in its stand not to issue the tickets to those who have lost with huge margin (more than 15,000 votes) in the past elections and those who have been defeated twice in a row.  The parameters would make it lot easier for the AICC screening committee and the high command to shortlist ticket aspirants and pick the right candidates, sources pointed out. On the first day of the meeting on Saturday, many senior leaders in the panel had advocated the need for guidelines to select candidates.

They had insisted that the one-man-one-post principle should be followed (to keep out those heading district units and frontal organisations) and tickets to the sitting MLAs should be issued after reviewing their performance in the last five years. The meeting reportedly witnessed heated discussion on setting the parameters. The Committee had a lengthy and heated discussion on Bangalore which has 28 constituencies. In fact, it was because of serious differences among the leaders, the committee was forced to set the parameters, sources said.

Despite setting up four revenue division-wise committees comprising about 10 members each to shortlist the candidates, the selection committee could not shorten the aspirants' list as per its expectations.

As a result, it decided to recommend a panel of three to five names as probable candidates for each constituency to the screening committee. The party had received about 2,150 applications seeking the tickets.

However, party insiders said, the Committee has been able to finalise candidates for 62 constituencies and most of them are sitting MLAs and senior leaders. On the contentious issue of inducting 'outsiders,' the Committee has resolved to leave it to the decision of the high command.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Mangaluru: A native of Kerala was arrested on charge of misbehaving with crew on an Air India Express flight while travelling from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport. The man even threatened to jump from the aircraft, according to officials.

Siddartha Das, the security coordinator for Air India Express, lodged a complaint against the passenger, identified as Muhammad BC from Kannur, Kerala, after which he was caught by the airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru. He was later handed over to the police.

DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal said the incident occurred on Flight IX814 on May 8.

When the flight was above the sea, Muhammad reportedly said he wanted to get off the plane, posing a threat to all on board. The unruly flyer was detained by airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport and he was handed over to Bajpe police station officials.

Sources added once the flight took off from Dubai, the accused went to the lavatory and thereafter started inquiring with the cabin crew about a person named Krishna who was not on the flight. Muhammad kept on pressing the bell for in-flight assistance, even though the cabin crew members were near at hand. He then picked up a life jacket, gave it to a crew member, and said he wanted to use it upon landing.

Karnataka: BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda was arrested in connection with a sex abuse video allegedly belonging to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna.

According to police, Devaraje Gowda was arrested at Gulihal tollgate by the Hiriyur police in this district on Friday night for leaking the video in a pen drive.

He was arrested on a tip-off received by the Hassan police, which wanted his presence for the case.

Several explicit videos involving Prajwal started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, which took place on April 26.

The MP, a grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, is absconding and a 'blue corner' notice has been issued against him by Interpol.

Three FIRs, including charges of rape, molestation, intimidation, blackmailing and threatening, have been registered against Prajwal.

Devaraje Gowda is accused of leaking these videos, which he has categorically rejected.

He contested in the 2023 Assembly elections against JD(S) MLA from Holenarasipura H D Revanna.

H D Revanna, father of Prajwal, is at present in jail on charges of kidnapping a woman, a mother of three.

Ahead of polls, Devaraje Gowda had warned BJP’s central leadership against backing Prajwal Revanna and brought his sex scandal to light.
