In addition to this, officials at the passport office also compel the applicants for a 'round seal' for authorisation of their documents such as birth certificate, caste certificate and other documents necessary to apply for passports. The system of round seals for authorisation is not in use in our district, and also not required while applying for passports. If a document is not authorised by the round seal, a letter should be written to the department concerned for confirmation, which is another hassle for passport applicants,” he said.
“Complaints have been received from applicants from Ullal station and Konaje station limits. We have written a letter to the Regional Passport Officer in Bangalore informing him about the matter, and have also requested the Mangalore Police Commissioner to issue directives to the passport office and the police department,” he said.
'Power cuts'
Flaying the state BJP government for its ineffectiveness, he said that the district faced shortage of electricity which caused problems for students, households, small industries and cottage industries. “At times when electricity is absolutely necessary, with examination of students approaching, the power cuts are unacceptable. While one power unit is functional, the second one has closed down, citing the reason that there was no availability of coal. If there is shortage of coal, the BJP government should have made long-term plans and purchased it beforehand. This is a result of the lack of long-term planning and complete failure of the BJP government,” he said, adding that the Congress would try to resolve the problem if it came to power in the next Assembly elections, announced on May 5.
Zilla Panchayat member N S Kareem, APMC member Santhosh Kumar, Mangalore taluk panchayat member Musthafa, Clara Coelho and Latheef Bantwal were present.
