The fire occurred at T A Energy Industries situated in Gerukatte on Wednesday afternoon. It is surmised that the fire lasted an hour and a half. Soon after the fire began, fire personnel from Uppala and Kasaragod fire stations reached the spot and succeeded in extinguishing the fire after arduous attempts.
Luckily, employees engaged at the factory escaped without any harm. However, the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.
Mohammed Khasim, a resident of Kankanady in Mangalore, had established the factory where old and used tyres were burnt to extract oil and powder from its remains.
According to the locals, the foul-smelling smoke emitting from the factory caused a lot of pollution in the surroundings and affected the health of the people living in the area. It is also said that the machinery and the factory were being run without implementing proper safety measures.
