Addressing a news conference at his office in Mangalore on Friday, Mr. Prakash said that as per the orders of the Election Commission of India, the model code of conduct for Assembly elections has already been enforced in the district and will continue until May 11.
Schedule
The issue of notification will be on April 10, the last day of nomination is April 17, scrutiny of nomination will take place on April 18 and the last day for withdrawing nomination is April 20. The election will be held on May 5 and polling will be open between 8 am to 5 pm. Counting of votes will be held on May 8.
Measures
Mr. Prakash said that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure that free and fair elections are carried out across the district. “We have carried out meetings with officials giving them necessary directions in this regard. Discussions have been held at Gram Panchayat levels as well, in order to direct PDOs to help people in registering names in voter list and other election related issues”, the Deputy Commissioner said.
Voters
As per the voter list put out on January 16 and 28, 2013, there are a total of 14,61,659 registered voters and 1,627 polling centres in the entire district in addition to 101 auxiliary voting centres.
Although 99.76% voters have been given voter identity cards bearing photographs, those who have missed out will be given their ID cards through booth level officers.
Those who have attained the age of 18 on or before January 1, 2013, and have not registered their names in the voting list, can still register using Form 6. Names wrongly registered or desired corrections can be made by submitting Form 8. The opportunity will be open til April 13, which will be processed by April 20.
Stating that there was an impressive 3% growth in voting percentage in ULB polls this time, Mr. Prakash said that he expects the voting percentage to increase by 10-15% in the district in the upcoming Assembly elections as well.
