Vokkaligara Yane Gowdara Seva Sangha Secretary D Padmanabha Gowda has said that in case the community is neglected then the members of the community will give an apt answer to the parties through their votes.
“The community has three lakh voters in the district, yet the community did not get the kind of representation it deserved, in the Assembly polls. The community had been neglected by major political parties even in the previous Assembly polls. Even while Christians, Muslims, Billavas and Jains have been given their due in the district, Vokkaligas have been neglected,” he said.
Gowdas make a sizable population in Sullia, Belthangady and Puttur taluks. The community makes up around 65 percent of the population in Sullia, around 50 percent in Belthangady and 45 percent in Puttur. With the constituency of Sullia being reserved for Scheduled Castes, the community had a right to claim a ticket from Puttur and Belthangady, he said.
He urged the political parties barring the KJP to include members from the community as candidates for Assembly polls, taking note of the fact that the JD(S) party had fielded Vokkaliga Dinesh as a possible candidate from Puttur constituency.
Congress aspirants
A similar appeal has been made by a group of Congress leaders belonging to the Vokkaliga community from Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady.
In a letter to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dr G Parameshwar, the leaders Dhananjay Adpangaya, Bharath Mundodi, M Venkappa Gowda, Devraj Kalige and Divyaprabha Chilthadka have urged the party leadership to consider fielding one of them as a candidate from the constituency of Puttur, claiming that it would result in the party wrestling Sullia from the BJP.
