
Mr Shetty, who quit the BJP in July 2012 after being denied a ministerial berth in Jagadish Shettar's cabinet at the last moment, had been playing a waiting game so far.
However, ending all speculation, the three-time winner on Monday announced that he would contest on his own without any political party's support.
Mr Shetty, who is recovering from minor health ailment, is expected to launch is campaign in the first week of April. He has been the senior-most BJP MLA in the district eve since he made his debut in the 1999 Assembly election by defeating Congress strongman Pratapachandra Shetty from Kundapur.
He was re-elected from the same constituency in 2004 when he defeated Congress candidate Ashok Kumar Shetty with an increased margin of 19,700 votes. He scored hat-trick when he defeated Congress candidate K Jayaprakash Hegde by a margin of 25,083 votes in 2008 Assembly elections.
