Bangalore, Mar 28: The State BJP?is planning to make extensive use of the new media to reach out to voters as part of its political campaign for the forthcoming Assembly polls.

The plan is to showcase the achievements of the government during the last five years via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  'Google hangout' sessions with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, State president Pralhad Joshi and party leaders S Suresh Kumar,?C?T?Ravi among others is on the cards. Special interviews with these leaders will also be hosted on the YouTube.

Channamallikarjun Patil, state convenor, BJP Communication Cell and head of Hi-tech Media Campaign said: “Technology is becoming the game changer in fighting elections. At present, there are 22 lakh internet connections in the State with 48 per cent confined to towns and villages alone. We plan to reach out to this large section of online population through Twitter and Facebook.”

A platform has already been set for online campaigning. The BJP?Twitter page has 6,000 followers, the highest among any political party in Karnataka. “We plan to relaunch our Facebook page next Monday. On an average, more than 10,000 people visit our Facebook page every day,” Patil said.

The BJP broke the news of the expulsion of Excise Minister M?P?Renukacharya on Twitter much before television channels started flashing the same paving way for thousands of responses.

“Twitter users are research-oriented. We cannot just make some comment and get away,”  Patil pointed out.

The party will also be webcasting major poll rallies. A voice-based SMS?campaign wherein Shettar will be appealing to people to vote for BJP will commence soon.

At the same time, the Youth Wing of the party is ready with two campaigns ahead of the polls.

For any young voter, their first participation in elections is a memorable one. The youth wing is all set to encash the enthusiasm among first-time voters by forming teams in all the 224 Assembly constituencies to try and convince them to vote for the BJP.

The teams, each comprising around 50 to 60 members, have already started scrutinising the voters list for first time voters. “We plan to meet young voters and share with them the party's ideology, the importance of good governance and administration,” says BJP?Yuva Morcha State President V Sunil Kumar.

Kumar said each Assembly constituency, on an average, has around 30,000 to 40,000 voters in the age group of 18 to 24. Armed with campaign material, the teams will station themselves outside college campuses and hubs frequented by youth.

“The youth of today are particularly interested in national issues. We plan to discuss national issues and how the UPA?government is handling them. The discussions will be kept friendly and informal,” he said. Once the BJP finalises the candidates, members of the youth wing will take up door-to-door campaigning.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
